A Conversation with Ashley Cawley, Director of CloudAbove

For many businesses, hosting is not just about server space. It is about knowing there is someone on the other end who understands the problem, responds quickly, and takes ownership when something needs to be fixed.

That idea has shaped CloudAbove from the beginning.

Based in Cornwall and serving businesses across the UK, CloudAbove has grown from its telecoms roots into a hosting company focused on reliability, honest support, strong infrastructure, and long-term customer relationships. We spoke with Ashley Cawley, Director of CloudAbove, about the company’s journey, what customers value most, why backups are central to their hosting strategy, and what is next as they continue building their own hosting platform, Scout.

Tell us about CloudAbove. How did you get started in hosting?

“CloudAbove had its roots in Cornwall, where we began life as a small Cornish telecoms business back in 2011. We were close to other small business owners every day, and we kept seeing the same story repeat itself: a local shop, a growing ecommerce brand, or a creative agency completely let down by their hosting provider, slow responses, surprise charges, nobody on the other end of the phone who actually cared.

We had the server management and infrastructure knowledge to do something about it, so in 2014 we made the leap and launched CloudAbove as a dedicated hosting company. The mission from day one was simple: treat every customer the way we’d want to be treated ourselves.”

That early experience gave CloudAbove a clear point of view. Hosting was not just a technical service customers were buying. It was trust, continuity, and the ability to keep their businesses moving without feeling ignored or unsupported.

What market, niche, or geographic region do you primarily serve?

“We’re proudly UK-based and UK-focused, operating from our office in Newquay, Cornwall, with infrastructure across three UK data centres in London, Manchester, and Maidenhead.

Our sweet spot is small and medium-sized businesses- think independent retailers, agencies, ecommerce brands, and professional services firms- who want genuinely great hosting but don’t have a large in-house IT team to lean on. They need a hosting partner they can actually pick up the phone to, not a ticket system and a three-day wait.”

That focus on UK businesses gives CloudAbove a clear advantage. Their customers need reliable infrastructure, but they also need accessibility. For many SMEs, the real value is having a hosting partner who can explain issues clearly, respond quickly, and provide practical guidance without layers of escalation.

What makes CloudAbove different from larger, more generic providers?

“The honest answer is: us. The people behind CloudAbove are what makes the difference. Our average support response time is under 10 minutes, and when you get a reply, it comes from someone who genuinely understands your problem, not a first-line triage agent reading from a script. We have one support tier, not three, which means you’re never trapped waiting to be ‘escalated.’

We’re also resolutely straightforward about pricing. No paid add-ons for things that should be standard, no upselling services customers don’t need. We’d rather recommend a competitor’s product if it’s genuinely the right fit than push something that isn’t.

On the infrastructure side, we don’t cut corners either. Our private cloud uses CPUs which can turbo up to 5GHz, super-fast NVMe storage, backed by RAID replication along with enterprise Dell, HP, and Supermicro hardware, all running on 100% renewable energy, which is something we’ve been committed to since 2013, well before it became a marketing talking point.”

CloudAbove’s difference comes from combining technical depth with a straightforward service model. Fast support, honest pricing, strong hardware, UK infrastructure, and a long-standing sustainability commitment all reinforce the same message: customers should not have to choose between performance and personal service.

What was the first customer, project, or moment that made you think, “We are really building something here”?

“The love and feedback we have received from our customers has always been incredible. Reaching our first one hundred five-star reviews was a big moment; it made us feel that our exceptional efforts towards customer service were truly being noticed.

Now, here we are in 2026 with over two hundred and fifty five-star reviews, and that community of happy customers remains one of our proudest achievements.

Beyond the reviews, our infrastructure has gone on to support some of the UK’s biggest crowdfunding platforms and London’s top entertainment venues, handling the scale and reliability those kinds of operations demand. Those are the moments that remind you what you’ve quietly built.”

Customer reviews are often a reflection of consistency. For CloudAbove, the growth from early five-star feedback to more than 250 five-star reviews shows that their approach to service has continued to resonate as the company has scaled.

What do your customers value most about working with your team?

“Consistently, it comes back to trust and accessibility. Our customers know that when something goes wrong, and in hosting, things occasionally do, they’re not going to be left waiting or bounced between departments. They’ll hear from a real person quickly, and that person will stay with the problem until it’s resolved.

There’s also a real appreciation for our honesty. We don’t have commission-based sales, so customers feel they can come to us with questions without worrying they’ll be pushed towards an upgrade they don’t need. That kind of straightforward relationship is harder to find than it should be, and our five-star reputation on Google and Serchen reflects how much it means to people.”

That direct relationship is especially important for businesses without large internal technical teams. When customers can trust that advice is being given in their best interest, support becomes more than problem-solving. It becomes part of the reason they stay.

How do backups fit into your overall hosting strategy?

“Backups aren’t an afterthought for us; they’re a core part of the promise we make to customers. When someone trusts us with their business-critical website, they need to know that if anything goes wrong, we can get them back up and running fast.

On our managed hosting plans, for example, we run hourly offsite backups as standard, with policies that can be tailored to each customer’s data protection needs.

More broadly, our whole infrastructure philosophy is built around resilience: triple-replicated storage, self-healing cloud architecture, redundant power and connectivity. Backups sit alongside all of that as the final safety net, and a genuinely reliable one at that.”

CloudAbove’s backup strategy fits into a wider approach to resilience. Redundant infrastructure, self-healing architecture, and reliable offsite backups all serve the same goal: keeping customers protected and giving them a clear path to recovery when something goes wrong.

Why did you choose JetBackup as part of your backup offering?

“In our fifteen years in business, we have tried many different backup solutions, and it is surprising how frustrating some of them can be: slow, clunky interfaces or over-engineered setups requiring multiple servers just to handle orchestration.

JetBackup was a breath of fresh air: a fast interface that actually made sense, giving us quick, easy, granular access to exactly what we needed to restore for clients.

Often you don’t want to restore an entire cPanel account. It’s specific files or databases that need picking out to give the client the best experience. JetBackup lets us do that on a daily basis with ease, whilst at the same time being perfectly capable of handling thousands of accounts at scale when that’s what’s needed.

It strikes a balance that very few backup solutions manage to get right.”

For hosting providers, restore flexibility matters. A customer may not need a full account restored; they may only need a specific database, directory, or file brought back quickly. JetBackup gives CloudAbove the granular control needed for everyday support while still scaling across large hosting environments.

Where do you see the hosting industry going over the next three years?

“We think the gap between commodity hosting and genuinely managed, relationship-driven hosting is only going to widen.

The race-to-the-bottom pricing that defines the large generic providers creates a lot of noise, but it also creates opportunity. There’s a growing segment of businesses who’ve been burned enough times to know that cheap hosting is rarely actually cheap when you factor in the downtime, the poor support, and the hidden costs.

We also expect sustainability to shift from a nice-to-have to a real buying criterion. We’ve been running on 100% renewable energy since 2013 and planting trees for every order since 2020, so we’re well positioned there, but we expect more providers to make serious commitments, and more customers to ask the question.

Finally, security and data sovereignty will matter more, not less. For UK businesses especially, having data held in UK data centres with clear compliance credentials is increasingly important. That’s always been part of what we offer, and we’ll continue building on it.”

CloudAbove sees the market moving in a direction where trust, sustainability, support, and data location matter more. While low-cost hosting will always exist, more businesses are recognizing the hidden cost of poor support, downtime, and unclear infrastructure practices.

What is next for CloudAbove?

“The most exciting chapter for us is something we’ve been building quietly, in-house, for several years: our own hosting platform called Scout.

Scout is far more than a control panel. It’s a lean, purpose-built software and hardware stack designed from the ground up for performance, outpacing traditional control panels like cPanel or Plesk by a significant margin. Where legacy control panels carry years of accumulated complexity, Scout is clean, fast, and built around the way modern web projects actually work.

For developers and agencies, Scout removes the friction that typically comes with managing a portfolio of sites. Spin up a new WordPress site with SSL in under ten seconds. Clone a staging environment in a couple of clicks. Deploy from a Git repository with push-to-deploy support. Manage WordPress health, Laravel queues, Artisan commands, and Magento sites all from a single, well-organised dashboard, no server management expertise required.

Performance is baked in at every layer. Full-page and Redis database caching, automatic WebP image optimisation, PHP OPcache, static asset compression, all available with a toggle, no third-party plugins or services needed. Pair that with our underlying cloud infrastructure and the results speak for themselves: sites on Scout are measurably faster than they were on anything that came before it.

Security is equally thorough, with a built-in WAF, bad bot blocking, brute-force protection, and site isolation all included as standard. Bots account for 42% of global internet traffic, and Scout keeps them well away from your server load.

Scout ships free with every CloudAbove cloud server and managed hosting plan, no licence fees, no upselling. It’s the natural evolution of everything we stand for: exceptional performance, delivered simply, without the hidden costs.

We’re incredibly proud of what the team has built, and we’re only getting started with it.”

Scout represents the next stage of CloudAbove’s philosophy: simplify the experience without weakening the technology behind it. By building their own platform, CloudAbove is taking more control over performance, usability, security, and the customer experience.

A Hosting Partner Built on Trust, Resilience, and Straightforward Support

CloudAbove’s story is rooted in a simple belief: hosting should be reliable, honest, and supported by people who care.

From its early days in Cornwall to its current UK infrastructure footprint, CloudAbove has built a hosting business around accessibility, strong technical foundations, transparent pricing, and customer trust. Their approach stands out in a market where many businesses have grown tired of slow support, confusing add-ons, and generic service.

Backups are a key part of that trust. With hourly offsite backups on managed hosting plans and a broader infrastructure strategy built around resilience, CloudAbove treats recovery as part of the service promise, not an optional extra. When customers depend on their websites, applications, stores, and data, having a reliable restore path can make all the difference.

At JetBackup, we are proud to support hosting providers like CloudAbove that combine high-performance infrastructure with real customer care and a clear commitment to doing things the right way.
