Partner Spotlight: HOSTAFRICA
Africa’s digital economy is growing quickly, but the path to getting online does not always look the same as it does in Europe or North America.
For many African entrepreneurs, the first step is not a traditional website. It may be a WhatsApp conversation, a social media page, mobile payments, or a small business trying to build trust before investing in a larger online presence.
HOSTAFRICA was built around that reality. Founded in 2016, the company has grown by focusing on local infrastructure, local support, local payments, and digital services designed for the way African businesses actually operate.
As part of the JetBackup Partner Spotlight series, we spoke with Frans Hendrik De Villiers about HOSTAFRICA’s mission, its role in Africa’s digital growth, why backups are essential to customer trust, and how hosting providers need to evolve in the age of AI.
Tell us about HOSTAFRICA. How did you get started in hosting?
“HOSTAFRICA was founded in 2016 with a simple mission: help African entrepreneurs and businesses succeed online.
From the beginning, we believed Africa’s digital journey was fundamentally different from Europe or North America. Many businesses here start on mobile phones, WhatsApp, and social platforms, not desktops and traditional websites.
That shaped how we built the company. Instead of simply reselling generic hosting, we focused on creating digital infrastructure designed specifically for African realities: local payments, mobile-first experiences, local support, and products that make it easier for businesses to build an owned online presence.
Today, HOSTAFRICA operates across South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, and Egypt, serving more than 100,000 customers and hosting over 150,000 domains.”
HOSTAFRICA’s origin story reflects a clear understanding of its market. Rather than forcing customers into a traditional hosting model, the company built around the real behaviors, needs, and starting points of African entrepreneurs and businesses.
What market, niche, or geographic region do you primarily serve?
“We primarily serve African entrepreneurs, SMEs, developers, agencies, and growing digital businesses.
A large part of our focus is helping first-time entrepreneurs move from WhatsApp or social-media-based commerce toward owning their own domain, professional email, and website.
At the same time, we also support more advanced customers, developers, SaaS businesses, AI teams, and agencies, who need reliable local infrastructure, low latency, local billing, and data residency within Africa.
Geographically, our strongest markets are South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya, but we continue expanding across the continent.”
That mix of customers gives HOSTAFRICA a unique position. The company serves first-time business owners taking their first step toward a professional online presence, while also supporting advanced technical users who need performance, control, and infrastructure closer to their customers.
What makes HOSTAFRICA different from larger, more generic providers?
“Most global hosting providers were built around desktop-first, credit-card-first markets. Africa works differently.
Here, businesses often start on smartphones. Payments happen through mobile money. Trust is built through messaging and social proof before someone ever launches a website.
We designed HOSTAFRICA around that reality.
That means mobile-first customer journeys, local currencies and payment methods, support that explains things in plain language, and products that remove complexity instead of adding more jargon.
For beginners, we simplify the journey from ‘I sell on WhatsApp’ to owning a professional online presence. For advanced users, we provide local high-performance infrastructure, including GPU compute hosted in Africa.
We don’t just localize language, we localize the entire experience.”
That distinction matters. Localization is not only about translating a website or offering regional pricing. For HOSTAFRICA, it means designing the full customer experience around how people discover, buy, learn, build, and grow online in African markets.
What was the first customer, project, or moment that made you think, “We are really building something here”?
“One major moment was realizing that our localized approach wasn’t just resonating with customers, it was changing our position in the market.
As we focused more deeply on African realities, we saw strong growth in domains, email, and hosting, especially from entrepreneurs who previously found traditional hosting intimidating or inaccessible.
Another defining moment was becoming one of the leading registrars in key African country-code domains, including No. 1 for .ng domains in Nigeria, No. 2 for .ke domains in Kenya, and a top registrar for .co.za domains in South Africa.
That was the point where we realized we were no longer just another hosting provider, we were becoming part of Africa’s digital growth story.”
Growth in country-code domains is a strong signal of trust and relevance. It shows that HOSTAFRICA is not only helping customers get online, but also contributing to the broader development of Africa’s digital identity and business infrastructure.
What do your customers value most about working with your team?
“Customers value that we understand their context.
For many business owners, getting online can feel complicated and intimidating. We focus heavily on removing that friction, simplifying the technical side, explaining things clearly, and helping customers move forward confidently.
They also value local relevance: local support, local payments, local infrastructure, and products designed for how African businesses actually operate.
For more advanced customers, reliability, performance, and responsive support are critical.
Ultimately, customers work with HOSTAFRICA because we help them take the next step, whether that’s launching a first website, setting up professional email, or deploying advanced workloads locally in Africa.”
That ability to meet customers where they are is a major advantage. Some customers need education and simplicity. Others need performance, infrastructure, and advanced capabilities. HOSTAFRICA’s role is to help each customer move forward with confidence.
How do backups fit into your overall hosting strategy?
“Backups are a core part of our infrastructure, not an afterthought.
Things go wrong, malware infections, accidental deletions, failed updates, corrupted databases. Our backup strategy is what allows us to confidently tell customers: ‘We can recover this.’
For us, backups are part of delivering trust and reliability, not just a technical feature.”
For hosting providers, backup strategy directly affects customer confidence. When something breaks, customers are not just looking for storage, they are looking for a reliable path back to normal. HOSTAFRICA treats that recovery path as part of its core service promise.
Why did you choose JetBackup?
“We moved away from our previous solution after it started creating more operational problems than it solved.
After evaluating alternatives, JetBackup stood out because of its strong cPanel and DirectAdmin integration, flexible backup destinations, and reliable restore process.
One of the biggest advantages is that customers can perform self-service restores without needing to open support tickets, which improves both customer experience and operational efficiency.”
Self-service restores are an important part of modern hosting operations. They give customers more control when they need to recover quickly, while also helping support teams focus on more complex issues. For HOSTAFRICA, JetBackup fits into both the customer experience and the operational side of the business.
Has backup or restore capability ever helped you protect a customer?
“Many times. We regularly help customers recover from malware infections, deleted websites, lost databases, and missing emails.
One case that stands out involved recovering deleted emails needed for legal proceedings. Without backups, that data would have been permanently lost.
Situations like that reinforce why we treat backups as core infrastructure, not just an optional add-on.”
This is where backup value becomes very real. A restore is not always about getting a homepage back online. Sometimes it means recovering business-critical data, important communications, or information a customer cannot afford to lose.
Where do you see the hosting industry going over the next three years?
“The industry is changing rapidly, especially with AI accelerating customer expectations.
The bigger shift we see is that customers no longer want to assemble digital tools themselves. They want a complete solution that simply works: website, professional email, booking systems, collaboration tools, CRM, AI tools, all integrated together.
Pure hosting is becoming commoditized.
The providers that succeed over the next few years will be the ones that evolve from ‘hosting companies’ into complete digital solutions partners.”
That shift is already underway across the hosting industry. Infrastructure still matters, but customers increasingly expect outcomes, not just server space. The providers that can combine hosting, business tools, automation, AI, security, and support into a cohesive experience will be better positioned for the next phase of growth.
A Hosting Partner Built for Africa’s Digital Growth
HOSTAFRICA’s story is rooted in a clear understanding of the market it serves. African businesses are not following a copy-and-paste version of another region’s digital journey. They are building online in ways shaped by mobile access, local payments, regional trust, and practical business needs.
By focusing on that reality, HOSTAFRICA has become more than a hosting provider. It is helping entrepreneurs, SMEs, developers, agencies, and growing digital businesses take ownership of their online presence.
Backups are an important part of that trust. From malware recovery to deleted websites, lost databases, and missing emails, a reliable restore path can protect customers from serious disruption. For HOSTAFRICA, backup infrastructure is not an extra feature. It is part of delivering dependable digital services to businesses across Africa.
At JetBackup, we are proud to support hosting providers like HOSTAFRICA that are building modern, locally relevant hosting experiences and helping customers move forward with confidence.
